Wednesday : Is it cool to be gothic again?

Are you a goth? Do you enjoy listening to 70s punk bands? Are you a fan of the mysterious, dark arts?  If yes, this show is just for you!

Netlfix recently came out with an American teen-horror, Wednesday. It is the story of Wednesday Addams from the infamous Addams Family. This show was created by the help of Tim Burton so you can imagine how gothic and grand the sets and scenes must be. Our protagonist is a machine of sarcasm and passive aggression. She puts Chandler Bing to shame.

The story revolves around her being sent to a school called Nevermore. It is a school of outcasts. Vampires, sirens, werewolves, et cetera are just some of the creatures that study there. Wednesday gets hint of a big mystery surrounding the school.

She sets off on a journey to uncover the truth.

It is a very interesting watch with twists and turns in every single episode.

This show is vicious, scary and absolutely brutal. Not to forget the sapphic subtext.

There is a character in this series which is just a hand. It’s named “Thing”.  It steals the spotlight in whichever scenes it is in.

The homage paid to the cult classic Carrie is something every avid horror fan will jump with joy at.

It is an absolute delight to see Christina Ricci back on screen in 2022 for an Addams Family spin off. She played Wednesday in 1991.

I was a little skeptical going into this show because remakes and spin offs almost always disappoint (take The Lion King, 2019 for instance) but Netflix managed to bring a fresh breath of air to this tale while retaining the true essence of the character. Tim Burton was the perfect director for this series since he truly understands the genre of the eerie, odd, macabre, icky and a little bit kooky. I was especially fascinated by the modernisation of the characters with just enough to let you know that this is not a period piece, we still have TikTok trends and filtered selfies.

This eight episode series will make you want to finish it in one go with its gripping mystery and engaging characters storylines. The plot had me sitting at the edge of my seat. I can guarantee that you will not find the storyline predictable at all. It will keep you guessing till the end.

To sum it up, Wednesday is just Mavis from Hotel Translyvania, but more blood and more eyeliner.
