“A man’s expectation should never exceed his worth.’
Chad Stahelski just dropped the greatest action movie of the year and we are here for it! John Wick Chapter 4 is crazier, bloodier, more stylish than all the previous films in the franchise. Keanu Reeves and Chad just keep raising the bar again and again. Their consistency for making each film in the franchise better than the last one is unbeatable. Not to mention the fact that this film has the longest runtime out of all the four movies. Yet it feels like you want more and more.
The film does not let you breathe even for a second. Chase scenes and gun swinging start five minutes into the movie. Every single action sequence is more mind blowing than the previous one. The action sequences are so perfectly orchestrated, it is a ballet of violence.
The overhead tracking shot was executed in the most flawless way possible with fire breathing rifles.
The film is glorious, nightmarish, biblical. It is all forms of badass. Visually, the John Wick films have always been pleasing but Chapter four takes the cake. Perfectly capturing the soft beauty of Osaka, the harsh winter of Berlin, the upbeat night and alluring sunrise of Paris, and the entrancing City of New York. The level of visual sophistication that this film operates on is top tier.
Along the way, we have an Ocean’s 11 style of ensemble of international stars ; Donnie Yen delivers a remarkable performance as a man consumed with dilemma, Hiroyuki Sanada did the ‘yakuza boss’ impression very well, Scott Adkins was absolutely brilliant, he played his character to perfection and delivered a very menacing performance, Ian McShane embodied his chic personality with elegance and gave Winston more life than ever. Clancy Brown was a very good introduction to the series as well.
Rina S(lay)wayama was very impressive considering that this was her debut. She had quite a few consummate action sequences which solidify her as a worthy action girl in the future. Bill Skarsgard however was subpar. He was not intimidating or baleful even in the slightest way. He was supposed to be the Viggo Tarasov of the film ended up being the Iosef Tarasov.
Let’s talk about our protagonist, Keanu Reeves. His slick hair rolled back that do a little dance whenever he’s beating the living crap out of someone is like visual orgasm.
This will probably be lauded as his magnum opus in the future. It’s already considered as a cult classic. The biggest issue that most franchises are currently struggling with is how to make every sequel bigger and better than the previous one. This is where Chad and Keanu have done the unthinkable by going lengths and doubling the stakes.
Keanu snapping jaws, splatting blood everywhere by blowing bullets point blank into a dudes face, throwing a pair of nunchucks at people, riding a cool bike and a super cool horse should be enough reason for you to drop everything you’re doing and watch this adrenaline rush of a movie. Seeing the god of action at his most raw and vengeful, unleashing his wrath to get what he wants the most; freedom, couldn’t be depicted better.
This is the action movie to rival all other action movies. This one is for the history books, folks. John Wick’s epic journey for freedom has come full circle.
